BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSUB volleyball closed the 2009 season
in style Saturday afternoon with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 win over San Jose State
in the Icardo Center.
Not
only did the Roadrunners say farewell to two of the top-ranked players
statistically in school history-seniors Barbie Unfried and Kayla Williamson-but they said so long to their transitional
status as well. The next time CSUB takes the volleyball court, it will be NCAA
Division I Tournament eligible for the first time.
But
Saturday provided one more opportunity for the seniors to shine, and they went
out in style. Williamson collected 16 digs to break Mystie McNaughton's school
record for digs in a season and set the new standard at 664. Unfried,
meanwhile, added 33 assists to her career total and will finish the season as
the No. 1 setter among NCAA Division I Independent schools. She also ends her
career ranked No. 5 on CSUB's career assist list, despite playing just two
seasons as a Roadrunner.
Given
the backdrop, the match itself was almost anticlimactic. CSUB raced to an 8-0
lead in the first set and never trailed while winning the first two sets. The Spartans
fought back to make the Roadrunners work for the third set, but CSUB battled
through nine ties and five lead changes to pull out the win and the match.
Outside
hitter Lindy DeGeare
finished her breakout sophomore season with a match-high 15 kills. Freshman
rightside hitter Morgan Pettway
also finished the season strong with eight kills.
Middle
blocker Alysia Baker
added three aces Saturday to edge DeGeare for the NCAA Division I Independent
lead in that category. The sophomore serving duo finished 1-2 among Independent
servers this season, with 54 and 52 aces respectively.
