Lima's 22 Kills Not Enough for CSUB vs. Weber State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A hard-fought battle resulted in a 3-1 victory for the road team Friday night in the Icardo Center as Cal State Bakersfield dropped its home opener against Weber State.

  • Bakersfield won the opening set but fell in the next three with the largest margin of victory in any set being four points as the two teams scrapped for a victory (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 27-25).

How it Happened

CSUB never trailed in the opening set, scoring the first three points and breaking an 8-8 tie with six straight. Weber State later pulled within 18-17, but the `Runners rallied with three unanswered points and reached set point at 24-19 before closing out the frame.

The second set featured nine ties and three lead changes. CSUB built a 13-7 lead and remained ahead 15-9 before Weber State rallied to tie the set at 17. The `Runners regained a 21-20 edge, but the Wildcats scored four straight to even the match at 1-1.

CSUB erased a 15-11 deficit in the third with four unanswered points, then battled to a 20-18 lead behind consecutive Lima kills. Weber State drew even, and Duran put the `Runners back in front 21-20, but the Wildcats claimed the final five points.

The `Runners hit .394 with 17 kills in the fourth and rallied from a 20-16 deficit to reach set point at 24-23. Weber State scored twice before Lima's kill tied the set at 25, but the Wildcats won the final two rallies to seal the match.
