`Runners Down Wildcats in 5, Notch Wright's 200th Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Freshman Anna Bacchin hit .500 with 17 kills as Cal State Bakersfield rebounded from the Friday night's loss to hand previously unbeaten Weber State its first defeat (25-14, 25-17, 18-25, 25-27, 15-11) Saturday at the Icardo Center. The `Runners improved to 3-3 while earning Head Coach Kristen Wright her 200th career win.

  • Bacchin tied the match high with 17 kills, just three shy of Cal State Bakersfield's freshman record.
  • Outside hitter Suelen Lima added 14 kills while middle blocker Jordyn Waite-Ward had 13 kills on .280 hitting and six blocks. Defne Yanik posted a team-high seven blocks, and Nele Broszat added six.
  • Samantha Capinpin recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs while serving three aces. Luiza Da Cruz added 20 assists and Analiese Gagliano had 11 digs.
  • CSUB held Weber State to .167 hitting and earned advantages of 13-8 in blocks and 9-3 in aces. Tennille Gonder led the Wildcats with 17 kills, and Morgan Pratt handed out a match-high 35 assists.
How it Happened

After five early ties, CSUB took control with six of the next eight points to build an 11-7 lead. The `Runners later used a 6-0 run to stretch a 13-11 lead to 19-11 before taking the first set. CSUB hit .429 and held Weber State to .042 in the frame.

CSUB never trailed in the second, building a 6-1 lead before Weber State pulled within 11-10. Weber State later tied the set at 17, but CSUB closed on an 8-0 run. Broszat served the final seven points and delivered two aces during the surge.

Weber State opened the third on a 5-1 run and closed it with four straight points. The fourth featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. CSUB used a 5-0 run to lead 15-13 and later held a 25-24 set point, but the Wildcats won the final three rallies to force a fifth.

Tied at 2 in the fifth, the `Runners scored four straight and never trailed again. They stretched a 10-7 lead to 13-7 and withstood a late push, hitting .375 while holding Weber State to .000.
