SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — On senior day at Baggett Stadium the CSUB baseball team could not slow the Cal Poly offense as the Mustangs exploded for a school record 32 hits in a 25-8 final over the Roadrunners Sunday.
Bakersfield concluded its second season of existence with a 26-30 overall record, doubling its win total from the 2009 inaugural season. Cal Poly closed out the 2010 season with a 23-32 overall mark.
Brandon Boren concluded his final game as a Roadrunner with three hits, bringing his season totals to a program best 98. Jeremy Rodriguez added three RBIs on two hits, finishing the year batting an even .400. Kevin Younger, Martin Medina, and Kyle Richardson also added two hits each for CSUB.
Cal Poly designated hitter Mitch Haniger, third baseman Evan Busby and right fielder Bobby Crocker collected five hits each to lead the Mustangs at the plate.
Leadoff walks issued to the Mustangs became trouble for CSUB starter Mike McCarthy in both the first and the second. Luke Yoder drew a full-count walk in the home half of the first, and later scored on a Haniger single to third. In the second, McCarthy walked Elliot Stewart the gave up a two-run home run to Busby.
McCarthy got two quick fly outs in the fifth, but the Mustangs began a two-out rally with beginning with a Stewart single up the middle. Three consecutive RBI-hits followed, including a two-run homer by Yoder, pushing the Cal Poly lead to 9-4. The Mustangs added a fifth hit and Crocker reached in a dropped fly ball to right, allowing the fifth run of the inning to score.
The Mustangs added five more runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and seven in the eighth.
The Roadrunners chased Cal Poly Starter Eugene Wright into the dugout after just 1.2 innings with four runs in the top of the second. Richardson singled to lead off the inning, Derek Geisinger drew a walk and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch by Wright. An RBI-single by JJ Henry allowed Richardson to score and moved Geisinger to third for Joey Mills, who hit a sacrifice fly to center. Boren tripled to the right-center field wall, sending Henry home. Two batters later, Boren scored on Rodriguez' single up the middle, forcing the Mustangs to go to the bullpen.
Reliever Mark DeVincenzi gave up a four-pitch walk to the first batter he faced, but was quickly able to record the third out on a Jason Kudlock line-out to right. DeVincenzi went on to strike out six and scatter just three hits in 4.1 scoreless innings.
Bakersfield added two runs in the seventh on RBI hits by Kudlock and Richardson and two more in the eighth on a two-RBI double to center by Rodriguez.
McCarthy surrendered a season-high 14 hits, including three home runs, for nine earned runs in 4.2 innings. Montoya lasted just a third of an inning, quickly retiring David Van Ostrand to end the fifth, but allowing four hits, including three doubles, for four runs to open the sixth.
