BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Senior setter Barbie Unfried (Bakersfield
HS) recorded a season-high
55 assists to help the CSUB volleyball team come back from a two sets to one
deficit and upend Central Valley rival Fresno State 25-23, 31-33, 19-25, 25-17,
15-9 at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.
Sophomore
middle blocker Alysia Baker (Vista/Tri-City Christian) was the main beneficiary of Unfried's
prolific night, putting down a career-high 18 kills. Freshman outside hitter Morgan Pettway (Fort Worth, Texas/Fossil Ridge HS) added a collegiate-high 13 kills.
The
first two sets told the tale of just how close this match would be. The Roadrunners
led by five multiple times in the first set, but Fresno kept coming back until
a Pettway kill at 24-23 finally gave CSUB the set. CSUB had six chances to put
away the second set--and saved a pair of Fresno set points as well--before kills
by Marissa Brand and Brianna Clarke allowed the Bulldogs to even the match at
one set apiece.
Fresno
used a 9-0 run to take control midway through the third set en route to the
25-19 win. But Baker and Pettway took control in the fourth set, combining for
13 of CSUB's 19 kills as the Roadrunners won going away to force the decisive
fifth set.
The
fifth set was close early, but Baker's final two kills of the night helped CSUB
open a 10-6 lead, and the Roadrunners held the Bulldogs at arm's length down
the stretch to complete the comeback.
CSUB
(13-16 overall) heads to Fresno to face undefeated Fresno Pacific Thursday
night. The Roadrunners return to the Icardo Center to close the regular season
at home against San Jose State Saturday at 1 p.m.
