WICHITA, Kan. ? Led by an outstanding performance from senior middle blocker Rosemary Stribling (West HS), the CSUB volleyball team came back from a game one loss to roll past Lamar University 28?30, 25?20, 25?18, 25?21 in match seven of the Best Western Shocker Classic at Wichita State Friday night.
Stribling recorded a match?high 20 kills while hitting an even .400 to lead four Roadrunners in double figures against the Cardinals. Freshman middle blocker Alysia Baker (Vista/Tri-City Christian HS) and senior outside hitter Sarah Norman (Stockdale HS) each had 11 kills while freshman outside hitter Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS) chipped in 10 kills and 20 digs.
DeGeare's 20 digs, combined with an outstanding 24?dig effort by senior libero Mystie McNaughton (Stockdale HS) was one of the key factors in the outcome. CSUB's ability to survive long rallies proved a constant theme Friday evening, helping the 'Runners pull away late in games two and four.
The 'Runners arguably should have taken the match in three games. Despite playing poorly, they led 23?21 in the first game before an overpass and a pair of Baker attack errors gifted Lamar game point at 24?23. But the freshman rebounded with blocks on the next two points and the 'Runners had a good swing for the win but couldn't convert as the Cardinals eventually pulled out the extra time win, 30?28.
CSUB's uneven play continued in the second game as they built a 17?11 lead, but three more 'Runner miscues helped Lamar close the gap to 20?18 before a pair of Sarah Warner (Tehachapi HS) kills closed out the game.
The 'Runners broke open a close third game to win going away before a pair of Norman kills thwarted a late Lamar rally to close out the match in game four.
The 'Runners will close out play at the Best Western Shocker Classic Saturday when they face Ohio State and Coastal Carolina.
