SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team opened its farewell tour of the California Collegiate Association with a convincing 86–54 win over San Francisco State at the Swamp in San Francisco Friday night.
Sophomore guard Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) scored 11 of her team–high 19 points in the first half as the Roadrunners (2–1, 1–0 CCAA) built a 48–16 halftime. Despite the lopsided margin, Bakersfield did not play well in the opening minutes, but San Francisco State sputtered out of the gate, allowing the Roadrunners time to find their groove.
The Roadrunner lead was just 12–8 when a Jessi Loring (Saugus/College of the Canyons) jumper sparked a 21–1 run that gave Bakersfield control at 31–9. A Shonetta Crain–Williams jumper ended the run, but with that shot at the 5:04 mark, she became just the second Gator to score in the game.
The Roadrunners shot better than 50 percent in the first half, nailing 5-of-10 from beyond the three–point arc in the process. That effort made the second half mostly academic. For its part, San Francisco State played substantially better after the break, but the Gators never got closer than 60–37 before the Roadrunner reserves put the game on ice.
Loring posted her second double–double in three games this season, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Christine Kepenekian (Burbank HS) chipped in a career–high 10 rebounds to help Bakersfield post a 55–38 edge on the glass.
Sophomore forward Krystle Mays led San Francisco State (0–5, 0–1) with a game–high 21 points.
The Roadrunners will conclude their two–game Northern California road trip Saturday night at Cal State Monterey Bay. They return to NCAA Division I play next week when they play at the University of Houston Dec. 6.
