CLOVIS, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's track and field teams traveled north to compete in the waning hours of the afternoon at the CenCal Twilight Invitational on Tuesday. The Roadrunners posted several strong performances as the men's squad went 1-1 in duals while the women were 0-3.
“It was very cold and windy, but we competed through it,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field for CSUB. “Madison Bundy did great in the javelin with a new PR and Joselito Flores did well in the high jump.”
Men
Flores, a sophomore, won the high jump with a mark of 6-06, just two inches off of his personal best. Junior transfer Justin McKinley placed third, just two inches behind Flores while freshman Tim Van Horn and sophomore Alec Benavides both jumped 6-02.
Sophomore sprinter Anthony Jones improved his personal best in the 200-meter dash by .01 seconds. The native of Compton, Calif. posted a time of 22.90 to finish fifth on Tuesday.
Fellow sophomore Tristan Watson also posted a PR in the 110-meter hurdles. The 6-foot-2 graduate of Stockdale High School lowered his previous best from 15.90 to 15.06 in the fourth-place finish. Watson is now 19th all-time for CSUB in the event.
In the hammer throw, senior Emmett Wirtz finished second with a throw of 150-00, just under three feet off of his personal best. Freshman Luis Mendez improved his personal best by 16 feet with a mark of 120-03 to finish third. Mendez went on to improve his shot put best by three feet with a mark of 44-05.50 in a fourth-place finish, one spot ahead of Wirtz (42-02.00).
Women
Bundy, a redshirt senior who completed her four years of eligibility with the CSUB softball team, is using her extra year of eligibility to participate with the track and field team. The native of Anacortes, Wash. moved from 10th all-time for the 'Runners to eighth with a toss of 135-03. Bundy's second-place throw is the best for a 'Runner since 2005.
Junior Alisha Byrd also posted a PR on Tuesday with a long jump of 17-03.25, just one inch off of CSUB's season-best. The native of Victorville, Calif. finished seventh while teammate Audrena Harlan finished one place behind at 16-11.25.
Redshirt junior Marina Emhoff lowered her personal best in the 200-meter for the second straight week. The Bakersfield native finished in seventh with a time of 25.20 and is now less than a tenth of a second off of the CSUB Top 20 list.
Senior captain Tricia Cervantes finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.34 in her first attempt at the event this season. Cervantes also finished fourth in the javelin with a season-best throw of 109-04.
The Roadrunners are not done with competition for the week as CSU Bakersfield will be back in action on Friday and Saturday. CSUB will travel for the Cal Poly Invitational on the Central Coast.
