BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.- CSU Bakersfield (30-21)
took advantage of a Jordan Ribera error in the bottom of the eighth to score
three runs and sweep No. 19 Fresno State (37-14) Sunday afternoon at Hardt
Field.
Ryan McIntyre (Jr., Henderson,
Nev., Coronado HS) led off the
bottom of the first for the Roadrunners with his second home run the year. The
Roadrunners added a run later in the inning for a two-run advantage.
Aaron Judge tied the game in the top of the second with a
two-RBI double. Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura,
Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) put
CSUB back into the lead with a two-run home run (his team leading ninth of the
year) in the bottom of the third. Fresno
State loaded the bases
with one out in the fourth for Pat Hutcheson who popped out to short. Danny Muno
grounded out to third to end the threat.
Back-to-back walks from Roadrunner starter Jonathan Montoya
(Jr., Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS) with one out in the
top of the sixth brought Austin Wynns to the plate. Wynns' ground out hit Fresno State
runner Kenny Wise in the leg resulting in the second out. Pinch hitter Justin
Mallory walked to load the bases, bringing up Muno. Muno beat out a slow roller
to second for a single to make it 4-3. Brennen Gowens flew out to center for
the final out of the inning.
Jordan Ribera tied the game at four with his ninth home run
of the year in the top of the seventh. The Bulldogs put runners in scoring
position in the eighth, but Medina,
who relieved Montoya with one out in the seventh, struck out Dusty Robinson to
end the inning.
Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula
Vista, Calif., Bonita
Vista HS) singled to begin the bottom of the eighth. With one out, pinch hitter
Stuart Smith (R-So., Ventura,
Calif., Buena HS) hit a shot into
right field where Robinson lost it in the sun, resulting in a double and Sanay
advancing to third. Bulldogs' reliever Taylor Garrison struck out Kevin Younger
(So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) for the second out.
Tyler Shryock (Fr., Tehachapi, Calif.,
Desert Christian HS) hit a ground ball to Ribera, the Fresno State
first baseman.
Ribera made an error which resulted in the ball reaching right
field allowing both Sanay and Smith to score. McIntyre tripled to right center
to score Shryock for the final run of the day. Medina, a finalist for the John Olerud
Two-Way Player of the Year, struck out the side in the top of the night for his
third victory of the year.
McIntyre, who batted in three different spots in the
three-game series, went 2-for-4. Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand
Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS) went
2-for-4 as did DC Legg.(Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress
College). Montoya and Medina combined for 12
strikeouts (Montoya-7, Medina-5). Garrett Weber paced the Bulldogs as he was
3-for-5. Wynns was 2-for-3.
The Roadrunners make the program's final road trip of the
year Tuesday when CSUB visits the University
of San Francisco at 3
