CSUB Baseball Sweeps Washington

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSUB (5-2) swept the University of Washington (1-5) in a college baseball doubleheader Feb. 27 at Hardt Field.

The Roadrunners defeated the Huskies 11-1 in the opener. Junior lefthanded pitcher Jonathan Montoya (Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS) tossed a complete game four-hitter. Montoya threw 115 pitches, 77 for strikes. Montoya struck out six and walked only one.

Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) and DC Legg (Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress College) each went 3-for-5 with three RBI's as CSUB pounded out 16 hits. Ryan McIntyre (Jr., Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS), Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS) and Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) all tallied two hits.

CSUB won the nightcap 7-4. The Roadrunners led 4-0 in the seventh when the Huskies tied the score on four unearned runs. With the score tied and one out, Younger singled and advanced to second on a Rodriguez single. Medina came up next. Medina who entered the game in relief of CSUB starter Mike McCarthy (R-Sr., Brentwood, Calif., University of Redlands), in the top of the frame and gave up the unearned runs, smacked a single to right center to plate Younger for what proved to be the gamewinning run.

Oscar Sanay's (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) sacrifice fly scored Rodriguez for a 6-4 Roadrunner advantage. Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) gave CSUB an insurance run in the eighth when he singled in Legg. The Cougars stranded two runners in the eighth and left a runner on in the ninth as Medina struck out the final two batters of the game for the victory.

The Roadrunners recorded 15 hits, led by Sanay who went 3-for-3 with two RBI's. Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Letourneau, Younger, and Legg each registered two hits. McCarthy and Medina combined for 13 strikeouts against four walks.

CSUB takes a four-game winning streak back to Hardt Field for a two-game series against Valparaiso Mar. 1-2. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on both days.
