FRESNO,
Calif. - Led by a
season-high 20 digs from freshman Haleigh
Haratyk (Corona/Centennial HS) the CSUB volleyball team nearly scrambled
its way to two set wins before falling to Sacramento State 25-16, 25-22, 25-21
Friday evening in the opening match of the Fresno State Tournament at the Save
Mart Center.
Haratyk's
dig total was the second most on the team this season, trailing only Lauren Holderman's (Bakersfield HS) 33
in a five-setter versus Gonzaga. They were the most ever by a non-libero in a
three set match in CSUB's NCAA Division I history.
Sac
State jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead to start the match and the Roadrunners
never got closer than four the rest of the way.
Sets
two and three proved much different stories, however, as the teams combined for
17 ties and nine lead changes. Unfortunately for CSUB, late spurts by the
Hornets turned the tide against the 'Runners both times.
With
Sac State clinging to a 15-14 lead in the second set, consecutive bad sets by
CSUB gifted the Hornets points, allowing them to expand their lead to 18-14,
from where the teams traded points to the finish line.
In
the third set, the 'Runners battled back from 12-8 down to grab a 16-14 lead.
But Sac State used what appeared to be a blown call on a mistimed but legal set
by CSUB freshman Samantha Whittington
(Frontier HS) to spark a 5-0 run that put the Hornets ahead to stay.
Junior
outside hitter Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale
HS) put down 10 kills for CSUB. She was the only player for either team to
reach double figures.
CSUB
concludes play at the Fresno State Tournament Saturday with matches against No.
7 USC at 10 a.m. and host Fresno State at 7 p.m.
