EDINBURG, Texas - After dropping a heart-breaker in an 18-16
fifth set loss at UT-San Antonio Tuesday night, the CSUB volleyball team evened
its record on the season with a 25-15, 28-26, 25-14 sweep of UT-Pan American
Wednesday night in Edinburg.
Sophomore
outside hitter Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS) continued a strong start to her Texas trip
with a match-high 17 kills and a career-high .467 attack percentage. Sophomore
middle blocker Alysia Baker (Vista/Tri-City Christian HS) hit .450 with 11 kills in 20 swings.
"I
thought we did a nice job bouncing back from a tough loss last night and a long
van ride from San Antonio to Edinburg today," said CSUB Head Coach John Price.
"Lindy and Alysia played very well. Overall, it was a good win."
The
Roadrunners (4-4 overall) climbed out of a 6-1 hole in the first set, finishing
with a 14-4 run to take a 1-0 lead. A Baker kills saved the only set point against
CSUB would face on the night at 25-24 in the second set and the Roadrunners
held on to win despite the officials bizarrely allowing the same UTPA player, libero Rebecca Toddy, to
serve two rotations in a row at 24-24 and 25-25.
The
Roadrunners slowly broke open the final set, turning a narrow 9-6 lead into an
18-8 edge that wouldn't be challenged.
CSUB
continues its six-match swing across Texas Friday when it opens play at the
Husky Classic on the Houston Baptist University campus. The Roadrunners will
face HBU and Texas A&M Corpus Christi to begin tournament play Friday. They
will face the University of Pennsylvania and Lamar University Saturday.
