BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Sophomore middle blocker Alysia Baker
(Vista/Tri-City Christian)
was nearly perfect Sunday afternoon. Her flirtation with perfection led the
CSUB volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-13 sweep of Seattle University in
the Icardo Center.
Baker
put down 12 kills on 13 swings for an incredible .923 attack percentage. Her
spectacular day helped CSUB (12-13 overall) hit .370 as a team.
"Alysia
played great today, but she's been playing well all season," said CSUB head
Coach John Price. "When she gets up that quick, she's difficult to stop."
The
Roadrunners led virtually wire-to-wire, pulling ahead early in all three sets.
Led by a serve receive game that sided out at a solid 68 percent for the match,
the Roadrunners were able to blunt any big point runs by Seattle that might
have given the Redhawks some traction.
"We
played pretty well at Northridge Friday night, and I was happy to see that
continue," said Price. "We know Seattle is going to step up its game tomorrow,
and we will have to be ready to match that."
Seattle
did make a late run in the second set, pulling to within 22-21 on a Kelly
Biette kill. But a pair of Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS) kills sandwiched around a Barbie Unfried
(Bakersfield HS) ace put an
end to the upset bid.
DeGeare
led CSUB with 13 kills. She added a .455 attack percentage and three aces to
her stat line. Unfried chipped in seven kills and an ace of her own. Senior
libero Kayla Williamson (Stockdale HS), who entered the week ranked No. 4 nationally in digs, was a
victim of her team's efficiency, collecting a season-low 11 digs.
Cristin
Richards and Kaytlyn Dill led Seattle (6-19) with 13 and 12 kills respectively.
Jamie Mellies and Emily Deleissgues shared match-high honors with 12 digs
apiece.
The
Roadrunners and Redhawks will conclude their two-match set Monday at 6 p.m. in
the Icardo Center.
