BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB volleyball team bounced back from last week's five-set heartbreaker at Utah Valley to sweep visiting Bucknell University 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 Monday evening at the Icardo Center.
CSUB (11-9 overall) used strong serving and a solid serve-receive match to win in straight sets for the fifth time this season. Bucknell (8-13) fell for the second consecutive night after losing at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.
The Roadrunners got outstanding attacking play from middle blockers Alysia Baker (Vista/Tri-City Christian HS) and Rosemary Stribling (West HS) who combined to hit .560 on the match, with each player making just one error.
Led by their efforts, CSUB hit an impressive .338 for the match. It was the fifth match this season in which CSUB hit .300 or better, all Roadrunner victories.
The first two sets were much closer than the final scores indicated. Bucknell pulled to within 18-15 in the first set before a Stribling kill and a Kayla Williamson (Stockdale HS) ace helped the 'Runners pull away. It was 13-13 midway through the second set when another Stribling kill and a Mystie McNaughton (Stockdale HS) ace gave CSUB the separation it needed to take control of the match.
CSUB raced to a 7-2 lead to open the third set and never looked back on its way to the win.
Led by Stribling with nine, eight different 'Runners registered kills Monday night. Baker and Sarah Norman (Stockdale HS) added seven kills each.
With the 'Runner offense siding out at nearly 70 percent efficiency, the 'Runner defense recorded a season-low 28 digs. McNaughton led that effort with seven digs. Lindy DeGeare (four) and Williamson (3) combined for seven of CSUB's 10 aces.
Freshman Kyleigh McAhren and sophomore Heidi Kamp led the Bucknell offense with six kills apiece. Camp added three blocks to the Bison cause.
CSUB hits the road again this weekend to play at San Jose State Saturday. The 'Runners return home Wednesday (Oct. 22) to host Big West contender the University of the Pacific.
