BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team used a 17-0 run in the game's opening minutes and rolled to an 81-65 win over visiting San Francisco State Saturday night at Rabobank Arena. It was the sixth consecutive win for Bakersfield.
Senior center Jessi Loring (Saugus/College of the Canyons) broke out of a recent slump with a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double, her seventh of the season. Sophomore guard Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) added 10 points despite fouling out in just 22 minutes.
Sophomore forward Krystal Mays made her first 11 free throw attempts and led four San Francisco State players in double figures with 17 points. She matched Loring for game-high honors with 12 rebounds.
After the teams traded early baskets, a short Loring jumper ignited Bakersfield's early 17-0 run that put the 'Runners ahead 21-4. The first half lead never dipped below 14 points after that early spurt.
With Head Coach Tim La Kose substituting freely, the game got a bit sloppy in the second half. San Francisco State took advantage, trimming the deficit to 10 points at 49-39 with 15 minutes remaining before Bakersfield righted the ship. A Katherine Smith (Ohlone/Gulf Coast College) three-pointer sparked a lightning quick 11-1 run that put the 'Runners in control at 58-41.
Saturday's win, coupled with a Chico State loss to UC San Diego Saturday afternoon, lifts the 'Runners (14-6, 11-2 CCAA) into a tie with UCSD for first place in the CCAA race. San Francisco dropped to 4-13 and 4-8 with the loss.
Bakersfield continues its five-game homestand Tuesday night when it hosts Cal State L.A. in Rabobank Arena at 5:30 p.m.
