ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Sonoma State did something on Friday that no one had been able to do so far in the 2006 season: Shut down the Cal State Bakersfield offense.
The result was a 1-0 loss in Bakersfield's first road match of the season as well as the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams.
But if anyone was going to shut down the Roadrunner offensive machine in 2006, it seems fitting that Sonoma State was the team to do so. The Seawolves have had amazing success against Bakersfield in series history, and the Roadrunners have now just scored two goals in the last nine meetings against Sonoma State.
Bakersfield was outshot in the match 15-9 and standout goal scorer Taylar Sklar managed just one shot. Sklar was held scoreless for the second straight match after scoring seven goals in the first three games.
Sophomore Moriah Neville (Highland HS) had scored at least one goal in each match so far in 2006, but she too was held without a goal. She did, however, offer up the most offense for the Roadrunners on Friday with five of Bakersfield's nine shots including two that were on target.
Sophomore Carli Godard also had a pair of shots while senior Deena Plach had one shot.
The Sonoma State goal came in the 65th minute when a corner kick was headed to Khyra Buchanan's feet who was able to finish the goal. Courtney Oates and Lindsay Catton were both given assists on the play.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Ashley Witten made seven saves and allowed just the one goal while Seawolf goalkeeper Vanessa Merced saved all three shots on goal for the clean sheet.
The Roadrunners return to action on Sunday when they continue north on the road at Humboldt State. The women kick off at 12:30 p.m. in the first match of a CCAA women's-men's doubleheader.
