Roadrunners Come From Behind For 2-2 Draw

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Despite falling behind by two goals before a half-hour was played, Cal State Bakersfield came from behind for two goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation for a well-deserved 2-2 draw at the Main Soccer Field on Monday against Vanguard.

Both teams entered the match with identical 3-0-0 records and things didn't look good for the Roadrunners after falling behind by two goals considering that the Lions hadn't allowed a goal so far in the early season. But a goal apiece from Moriah Neville and Hollie Affentranger levelled the score and earned the draw for the Roadrunners.

Vanguard was clearly the better team early on and both goals came with the run of play. The Lions' talented pair of forwards Heather Hutton and Rachel Housepian connected on both goals with Hutton scoring both and Housepian assisting on the first and playing a key part in the second.

In the 17th minute, Housepian slipped a pass through the middle of the Bakersfield defense and found Hutton behind the defense. The senior made no mistake about the goal as she scored past Roadrunner goalkeeper Ashley Witten for the 1-0 lead.

Housepian started the play once against just six minutes later. Her long ball once again found Hutton behind the Bakersfield defense and Hutton eluded a defender and Witten for her second goal of the match.

But at that point, Bakersfield top scorer Taylar Sklar came into the match and everything changed. The Roadrunner senior didn't start the match, but her arrival clearly lifted Bakersfield. Vanguard outshot the Roadrunners 6-2 in the first 23 minutes, but Bakersfield outshot the Lions 26-6 the rest of the way.

Vanguard's defense held strong, though, and Lion goalkeeper Marissa Swift was brilliant making 11 saves on the night. But the Roadrunners finally broke through when Jennifer Mettler took a ball from the right side and sent it to the far post where Neville was waiting. She went back across the goal into the upper corner to narrow the deficit to 2-1.

Mettler was involved in the second goal as well. She sent a ball in from the right side that bounced around the middle until Nisha Chawla tapped it to Affentranger who finished at the near post to tie the score.

Bakersfield had an excellent chance to win in the first minute of extra time when Carli Godard took a long shot that was brilliantly saved by Swift, and Affentranger's rebound was tipped over the bar by Swift.

Bakersfield opens CCAA play this weekend with a Friday afternoon match at Sonoma State starting at 1:30 p.m.
