SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay picked up its first women's soccer win of the season on Friday afternoon when it knocked off Cal State Bakersfield 2-0 in Seaside.
Bakersfield (4-5-3, 1-5-3 CCAA) entered the match with two wins in as many matches all-time against the Otters (1-10-1, 1-6-1 CCAA) and had outscored them by a wide 8-1 margin, but Monterey Bay scored two quick goals early on and withstood some late pressure to not only earn its first win of the season, but also its first shutout of the year.
Courtney Hermann scored the first goal for the Otters in the eighth minute off of a corner kick, and Amber Spencer scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute to make it an early 2-0 lead for Monterey Bay.
The two teams combined to take just seven shots in the first half with the Otters scoring on two of their four shots in the half. Bakersfield came out in the second half a much stronger team and outshot Monterey Bay 8-5, but the Roadrunners couldn't find the back of the net.
Leading scorer Taylar Sklar took three shots and fellow senior Deena Plach took four, but none could get past Otter goalkeeper Erika Ulfeder, who made six saves in the shutout.
The Roadrunners played without second-leading scorer and strong midfielder Morah Neville, who was serving her one-match suspension for the red card given to her against Cal State Dominguez Hills last Sunday.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Ashley Witten made four saves but also allowed the two goals in the loss.
The Roadrunners remain on the road this weekend and will face San Francisco State on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the first half of a CCAA doubleheader.
