`Runners Drop Season Opener in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – A hard-fought first 45 minutes gave way to an unfavorable second half Thursday night in Cal State Bakersfield's season-opening match. The Roadrunners dropped a 4-0 clash with the Dons while getting the 2026 season underway.

Key Facts
  • USF took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute on Hannah Burns' penalty kick goal.
  • The Dons scored early and often in the second half, stretching its lead to 3-0 in the first 10 minutes of the period.
  • San Francisco capped the scoring in the 83rd minute with their second PK goal of the evening.
  • Thursday's match between CSUB and USF was the first in the all-time series in 14 years.
First Half

Bakersfield earned the first dangerous opportunity of the match in the fifth minute when Tania Tapia-Cardenas sent a deep ball over the top of the defense to a streaking Olivia Green. The `Runner forward nearly got to the ball in time, but a 50-50 clash with the USF goalkeeper saw Green's attempt go off target.

The Dons capitalized on a defensive miscue by Bakersfield as the `Runners fouled USF in their own box, giving up a penalty kick. Hannah Burns buried the opportunity in the back of the net, giving the Dons a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

Despite an otherwise-solid first 45 minutes, the `Runners trailed 1-0 heading into the halftime break. CSUB equaled USF in shots, 5-5, in a physical half that saw both teams pick up a yellow card.

Second Half

USF earned a corner kick less than two minutes into the second period and converted the set piece for a 2-0 lead on Kamryn Kaleiohi's volley to the corner. In the 55th minute, the Dons pressured the `Runners again and put another one in the back of the net for a 3-0 advantage.

The Dons capped the scoring in the 83rd minute with their second PK opportunity of the game. The `Runners came right back and put pressure on their hosts with a pair of dangerous moments, but USF held on for the 4-0 victory.
