BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer team showed something on Saturday that it hadn't been able to do consistently in recent years - score goals. With a three-goal second-half outburst, CSUB cruised past its alumni 4-0 in exhibition action at the Main Soccer Field.
It appears that new head coach Nicole Van Dyke, who played for CSUB from 1998-00, has past on some of her goal scoring knowledge to her new squad. Van Dyke ranks No. 2 in career goals at CSUB with 36 and holds the Roadrunners' school record for most goals in a season with 17.
Taylar Sklar was the leader of the strong offensive showing on Saturday with two goals and an assist. She started things off in the 19th minute with an unassisted goal and assisted teammate Deena Plach just after halftime to make the score 2-0.
After Carli Godard (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) made it 3-0 in the 56th minute on a brilliant individual effort in the box, Sklar came out firing again in the 59th minute with another unassisted goal to complete the scoring.
CSUB outshot the alumni 20-4 and Ashley Witten and Kayleigh Peaker combined to make two saves for the shutout.
Van Dyke tried to get the alumni back on track when she subbed herself into the match with 15 minutes to go and was able to get behind the defense, but Witten made a spectacular one-handed diving save on Van Dyke's shot to push it wide of the net.
CSUB opens its season next Saturday when it hosts The Master's College. The men play at 5 p.m. and the women kick off at 7 p.m.
