LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team has two wrestlers still alive after day one of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Friday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“We had some really tough matches today,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza.
Ian Nickell (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) defeated Christan Doyle of Army by major decision (10-0) to begin his tournament at 133 pounds. No. 13 Earl Hall of Iowa State defeated Nickell 11-9 in the second round. Nickell's first match in the wrestle backs was against San Francisco State's Jordan Gurroa. Nickell defeated Gurroa 6-4. Nickell concluded day one by defeating Nebraska's Eric Montoya 11-7. He will begin day two with a match against Jack Hathaway of Oregon State.
Adam Fierro (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) wrestles on day two for the 'Runners at 165 pounds. Fierro defeated Seth Thomas of Oregon State 11-2 in his first match. Fierro lost 4-3 to No. 15 Nicholas Wanzek of Minnesota. Fierro handed Arizona State's Jacen Peterson a 15-3 defeat in his first consolation match. Fierro defeated Justin Kresevic 10-4 to earn a spot on day two of the meet. Fierro will take No. 11 Taylor Massa of Michigan in his first day two bout.
Bryce Hammond (R-Jr., 174 Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS), Spencer Hill (R-Sr., 157, Clovis, Calif., Fresno City College), Timmy Box (R-Jr., 141, Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) and Sean Pollock (R-Sr., Oceanside, Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS) both posted 2-2 marks which took them both of tournament action.
Sergio Mendez (So., 125, Arleta, Calif., San Fernando HS), Coleman Hammond (R-Fr., 149, Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS), and Matt Williams (R-Fr., 197, Apple Valley, Calif. (Sultana HS) each went 1-2 and were eliminated from tournament action.
“We were competitive in many of those matches which is helpful for us to evaluate what we need to work on. For now, we are focused on tomorrow's matches.
Action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the finals set for 3 p.m. The Roadrunners return home Jan. 10 when CSUB hosts Brown at 7 p.m. For ticket information, call 661-654-BLUE.
