Sivec, Popham Win Gold at MPSF Championships on Day 3

ST. GEORGE, Utah / MISSION VIEJO, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield swimming and diving teams enjoyed a pair of gold medal performances on the third day of the MPSF Championships. The Roadrunners enjoyed victories in both the men's and women's 200 freestyle races with Vili Sivec and Mikayla Popham taking home MPSF crowns.

Women's Top Performers
  • Senior Mikayla Popham followed up Thursday night's silver medal performance in the 500 free with a first-place finish in the 200 free on Friday. The native of Sunshine Coast, Australia was the top qualifier in the morning prelims, then left the rest of the pool in her wake, winning the evening finals by almost a full second (1:47.75).
  • Lorena Jerebic started the night with a CSUB Top 5 mark in the 100 butterfly (54.98), placing 10th overall.
  • Hannah Marsh helped set the tone in the 400 IM, finishing 12th with a swim of 4:27.55.
  • Nicole Horton (1:51.07, t-9th) and Holly DiSimone (1:51.38, 12th) joined Popham in scoring points for the `Runners in the 200 free.
  • Chelaine Van der Westhuizen placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke A finals with a time of 1:02.74 and Danielle Albright also scored points in the B finals (1:03.52, 12th).
  • Chloe Brown (195.85) was the high-scoring women's diver of the day for CSUB on the 1-meter springboard while Madi Gray (184.95) was close behind.
Men's Top Performers
  • After earning All-Conference honors in the 500 free on Thursday, true freshman Vili Sivec outdid himself with a gold-medal swim in the 200 free the following night. Sivec edged the field with a NCAA B-cut time of 1:34.72 on the way to earning his first MPSF title.
  • Fellow freshman Yigit Salgam kick started the evening for Bakersfield, earning his own All-Conference nod with a fifth-place finish in the 100 fly (47.84). The native of Turkey kept busy on Friday, also scoring points in the 100 backstroke (49.64, 11th).
  • Jacob Folsom added points with an 11th-place swim in the 400 IM (3:59.39).
  • Senior Antonio Milin contributed to the team scored in the 100 breast (54.35, 12th) while freshman Arthur Schneider did the same in the 200 free (1:38.02, 10th).
  • Carter Walles joined Saglam by scoring in the 100 back with a time of 51.69 to place 16th.
  • The `Runners wrapped up the night with the men's 400 medley relay team of Saglam, Milin, Sivec, and Schneider placing fifth overall (3:15.78).
  • After qualifying for B finals in 12th place, Dyson Modica wound up with his second-straight ninth-place finish, this time on the 3-meter board. He improved his prelims score by over 50 points to 306.45 in the finals, less than 10 points outside of CSUB's Top 5 in the event.
  • Anderson Laing (239.40) and Robert Vlad (228.85) both improved in the finals as well.
