D'Arcy's Record Highlights Day 2 of Pepperdine Meet

LOS ANGELES – Another successful day of swimming at the Pepperdine Winter Invitational featured a school record and multiple Top 5 all-time swims for CSU Bakersfield on Saturday. The Roadrunners looked to Autumn D'Arcy, Jayssie Haynes, and Mikayla Popham to lead the way for the women while Ryan Brimer, Loren Gillilan, and Kris Rogic paced the Bakersfield men.

"I'm really pumped with the team's energy this weekend," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming. "We are looking really strong. Tomorrow is going to be a great last day for the `Runners."

D'Arcy, a sophomore from Redlands, Calif., got the morning off to a strong start, resetting her own school record in the 100 fly. She posted a time of 52.50 in the prelims before winning the evening finals by almost three tenths of a second.

"Jayssie's 400 IM was a great swim for her," Hansen said of one of his senior leaders. "She is right where she needs, mid-season, to be ready to contend for the WAC title in this event." Haynes' time of 4:24.79 was less than half a second off the leader as she finished runner-up on Saturday.

Popham, who hails from Sunshine Coast, Australia, posted the Bakersfield's fourth-fastest 200 free time (1:48.21) in the prelims, then moved into third all-time for CSUB with a finals time of 1:48.04. The freshman placed second in the event on Saturday night while also helping D'Arcy, Tabea Mose, and Lindsey Sohoel-Smith post the third-fastest 200 medley relay mark (1:42.98) all-time for the `Runners.

"Mikayla's 200 free was a fun race to watch," Hansen said. "She just keeps getting faster. Coming from Australia, she needs to get use to yards as they only swim in meters in Australia. Once we work on her turns, she will also be a contender to win this event at WAC."

Hansen continued on to applaud his other top female swimmers at the meet in Los Angeles: "Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, Rani Skeggs, Mia Bailey, Tabea Mose, Alix Neilan, and Maddie Cosgrove all continue to improve and dominate their events."

Sohoel-Smith posted a 1:04.50 in the 100 breast Saturday morning, good enough for fourth all-time for the `Runners. Skeggs and Bailey finished back-to-back in the 200 free prelims and finals with best swims of 1:52.92 and 1:53.43, respectively. After helping the `Runner relay to a top mark, Mose tackled the 100 back and finished seventh overall with a time of 56.58 her best of the day. Neilan (56.62) just out-touched Cosgrove (56.65) in the 100 fly finals.

Concluding his thoughts about the CSUB women, Hansen praised another young `Runner: "Freshman Hannah Marsh showed us tonight that she is here to make the WAC team. She has been super impressive." Marsh, a San Diego native, placed 20th in the 400 IM with a finals time of 4:38.07

Moving on to the `Runner men, Hansen looked to his usual cast of characters to lead the way: "Ryan has grown so much since his freshman year. He is hungry and it shows in his races. He isn't done; this will be his best year to date. His 200 Free tonight was aggressive. Loren and Kris swam well tonight for where we are in our training. We are really concentrating on the US Open, but they both finished Top 8 in their events."

Brimer, who hails from just up the road in Santa Clarita, Calif., placed fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.64. Gillilan placed fourth in the 100 fly (48.14 in prelims) while Rogic, a fellow junior, came in fifth in the 100 back with a time of 49.72 in the finals.

Hansen also mentioned Benji Duenas's 400 IM (4:06.66) as well as Julio Alcantar's (51.76) and James Skuse's (52.49) times in the 100 back as other great swims for CSUB's men.

"We decided not to put Brimer and Rogic in the 800 free relay tonight so they can start to rest a bit for the US Open," Hansen said. "However, Loren, Linus Ritcher, Michael Hart, and Adrian Paseta did a really great job." The relay team posted a time of 6:53.79 to finish seventh Saturday night.

Bakersfield has one final day of competition at the Pepperdine Winter Invitational. The `Runners will return to the pool at East Los Angeles College on Sunday to close out the meet. Prelims will begin at 9 a.m. again while Sunday's finals will kick off an hour earlier than the previous two days with start time set for 4 p.m.
