Aikenhead's 5th CG Highlights CSUB DH Sweep of SCU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Taylor Aikenhead's (So., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) fifth complete game of the season highlighted a CSU Bakersfield (15-15) doubleheader sweep of Santa Clara (17-12) Saturday afternoon at Hardt Field.

The Roadrunners defeated the Broncos 9-5 in the opener. CSUB scored all nine of their runs in the first three innings. Santa Clara scored twice in the fifth, once in the sixth and twice in the seventh. The Broncos put runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth, but CSUB reliever Hayden Carter (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Vista HS) got Andrew Biancardi to fly out to end the threat.

Carter picked up his second three-inning save of the season when he came on in the seventh after Scott Brattvet (Jr., Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Santa Ana College) exited with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

Frank Martinez (Jr., Riverside, Calif., East L.A. College) became the 25th Roadrunner to post two doubles in a game as he drove in three runs. Oscar Sanay (So., San Diego, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) charted two hits. Andrew Letourneau (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) recorded two RBI's.

Aikenhead, the Division I leader in complete games, tossed a seven-hitter in the nightcap as the Roadrunners earned a 3-1 victory. Aikenhead threw a season low 97 pitches as he struck out four and did not walk a batter. A Shryock single and a double steal involving Shyrock and Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chaparral HS) gave CSUB a 2-0 lead in the third.

Leading 2-1 in the sixth, DC Legg (R-Sr., Murrieta, Calif., Cypress College) drove in Shryock with a double for an insurance run. Brockmeyer and Shyrock both registered two hits.

CSUB, which has won six in a row and eight of its past nine, is at Cal State Northridge Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.

NOTES-After playing its longest nine inning game of the year in the first game of the day (2:40), CSUB played its quickest nine inning game in the nightcap (1:53)...CSUB is now 9-0 wearing camoflauge hats that the team began to use in a series against Air Force.
