McCarthy Records 12 Strikeouts; CSUB Defeats No. 19 Fresno State 6-0

By Chris Davis, Special to GoRunners.com

FRESNO, Calif.---For the second consecutive Friday night, Mike McCarthy (R-Sr., Brentwood, Calif., Univ. of Redlands) defeated a top 20 opponent as CSU Bakersfield (28-21) handed No. 19 Fresno State (37-12) a 6-0 defeat. The 6-3 righty struck out 12, walked two, and allowed just four hits.

McCarthy, who set the CSUB school record for most strikeouts in a game with 13 against the Bulldogs Apr. 13, 2010, tossed a two-hitter at No. 13 UCLA May 13. McCarthy's shutout was the first time that Fresno State has been held scoreless in 2011. Fresno State had back-to-back singles to start the eighth, but McCarthy got out of the jam and retired the final six Bulldogs of the game.

In the top of the first, Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) led the game off with a hot shot off third baseman Danny Muno's glove that was ruled a hit.  Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS)  followed that up with a hot shot off Muno's glove again, this time it was ruled an error, to move Letourneau to third.  Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) singled through the left side to plate Letourneau and advance Rodriguez to third.  Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) finished the scoring in the first with a solid single to center that plated Rodriguez.

The Roadrunners would put another run on the board in the top of the sixth.  Ryan McIntyre (Jr., Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS) , who had made a fantastic catch in the third, singled to centerfield.  After advancing to second on a wild pitch, McIntyre was moved to third on
a DC Legg (Jr., Murietta, Calif., Cypress College) sacrifice bunt.  Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) lifted a fly ball to left that allowed McIntyre to score.

With two out in the eighth, McIntyre doubled to right center off of reliever Charlie Robertson.  Legg singled to right to plate McIntyre. Rodriguez hit his third home run of the season in the top of the ninth that also drove in Letourneau who led off the inning with a walk.

Rodriguez hit a two-run run home run in the top of the ninth. McIntyre went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. In addition to his home run, Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Letourneau went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The series continues Saturday in Bakersfield at Hardt Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
