SURPRISE,
Ariz.-CSUB (9-2) extended its winning streak to eight by defeating
Kansas (4-5) 12-0 Mar. 4 at the Coca Cola Classic in George Brett Field.
CSUB
starter Mike McCarthy (R-Sr., Brentwood, Calif., Univ. of Redlands) and
KU's Tanner Poppe hurled zero's over the first four innings. The first
hit of the game came in the top of the fifth on a Cael Brockmeyer (Fr.,
Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) single.
The
very next CSUB batter, DC Legg (Jr., Murietta, Calif., Cypress College)
tripled to right field to plate Brockmeyer for the lead. A Tyler
Shryock (Fr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) sac fly scored
Legg for a 2-0 'Runner advantage.
Kevin
Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) tripled to right begin
the sixth and scored when Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif.,
Crespi HS) charted a sac fly to left. In the eighth, Martin Medina (Jr.,
Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) singled in Andrew Letourneau (Jr.,
Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) to make it 4-0.
Oscar
Sanay (Fr. Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) increased the lead to
five with a double that drove in Younger. With two outs, Legg cleared
the bases with a double to give CSUB an 8-0 advantage. A Mick Gaston (Jr.
Quartz Hill, Calif., Quartz Hill HS)
double
scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth which was followed up by a
Sanay sac fly for a 11-0 lead. CSUB went up 12-0 when Ryan McIntyre
(Jr., Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS) tripled to bring home Gaston.
Medina
was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Legg drove in four runs (2-for-4) while
Younger went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. McCarthy went eight innings,
gave up three hits, and struck out six before giving way to Spenser
Messmore (Jr., Granada Hills, Calif., Alemany HS) in the ninth.
CSUB
takes on Air Force
at the Coca Cola Classic Saturday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (PST) at the
Texas Rangers Complex.
