Washington State Defeats CSUB 4-3

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Washington State (2-1) defeated CSUB (1-2) 4-3 to conclude the teams' three-game baseball series Feb. 20 at Hardt Field.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Trace Tam Sing stole home on the back half of a Washington State double steal. The Roadrunners went in front with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth. Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS), Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) and DC Legg (Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress College) all recorded RBI's for CSUB in the inning.

Washington State took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. Tam Sing made it 3-2 when he singled in Adam Nelubowich. With two outs, Taylor Ard hit a two-run home run for what proved to be the gamewinner. The Roadrunners loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Cougars' reliever J.D. Leckenby struck out Rodriguez to end the threat.

CSUB had the tying runner on in the bottom of the ninth when Cael Brockmeyer (Fr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) singled with one out. Pinch-runner Imaad Nuriddin (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) moved to second when pinch-hitter Mick Gaston (R-Sr., Mesa, Ariz., Chandler-Gilbert CC) singled to left. Washington State's closer Paris Shewey got Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) to ground into a double play to end the game.

Eight different CSUB players recorded the eight Roadrunner hits. Mike McCarthy (R-Sr., Brentwood, Calif., University of Redlands) went the first seven innings and took the loss for CSUB. McCarthy struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Brett Jacobs led Washington State as he went 3-of-4. James Wise earned the victory for the Cougars by going 6.1 innings, striking out six.

The Roadrunners host the University of San Francisco Monday in a 2 p.m. tilt.
