CSUB Takes 11-10 Decision From Washington State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-CSUB defeated Washington State 11-10 in college baseball action Feb. 19 at Hardt Field.

The Roadrunners trailed 3-0 after the top of first, but rallied to take a 9-3 lead on the strength of a eight-run second inning. The second inning explosion was highlighted by a DC Legg (Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress College) home run. Mick Gaston (Jr., Quartz Hill, Calif., Quartz Hill HS) also smacked a home run in the stanza.

With three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, the Cougars closed to 9-8. A Gason sacrifice fly plated Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) while an Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) RBI single scored Ryan McIntyre (Jr., Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS) to give the Roadrunners some breathing room.

Washington scored one run in the eighth and added a run in the ninth when Brett Jacobs doubled home Collin Slaybaugh. A Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., Saint Bonaventure HS) wild pitch advanced Jacobs to third with two outs. Medina struck out Cody Bartlett to end the game.

CSUB posted 19 hits on the day, with Sanay heading up the attack with a 4-of-5 performance. Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS) and Letourneau each posted three hits. Sanay, Legg, and Gason all drove in three runs. Spenser Messmore (Jr., Granada Hills, Calif., Alemany HS) earned the victory with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief.

Medina was 1-of-3 at the plate before heading to the mound to earn the save. Medina struck out seven in three innings on the hill.

CSUB and Washington State conclude their three-game series Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
