Corcoran's Header Lifts Roadrunners Over Skyhawks

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Senior Tara Corcoran (La Verne, Calif./Cerritos College) scored in the 41st minute Friday evening to lift the CSUB women's soccer team to a 1–0 victory over the University of Tennessee–Martin on the Main Soccer Field. Corcoran headed a corner kick from freshman Tyler Shirk (Monrovia HS) into the back of the net for the lone goal on the evening. The Roadrunners moved to 1–2–1 with the win while the Skyhawks fall to 1–3–1.

CSUB controlled the pace of the game from the onset, outshooting UTM, 22–12, on the night including a 14–4 advantage in the opening frame. The Roadrunners also drew four corner kicks while allowing just three. Picking up her first win of the season was sophomore Jessica Montaño (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) who made four saves on the evening.

Throughout the game, the 'Runners had chances, putting 14 of their 22 shots on target. Skyhawk goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie made 13 saves including a couple of difficult efforts to keep Roadrunner shots out of the net. Montaño also had a strong showing in net, breaking up multiple crosses and holding a goal line stand late on a free kick that appeared to go in but was whistled back after it was confirmed she had secured the shot and was fouled. Corcoran was dominant on the back line, winning nearly every ball in the air. The clean slate was Montaño's first of the season and the second of her career.

Up next, CSUB heads to Spartan Stadium on Sunday to take on San Jose State at 1 p.m.
