SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Jason Kudlock homered twice while Martin Medina, Mick Gaston and Jeremy Rodriguez each tallied one long ball as the CSUB baseball team claimed a 13-10 win over UC Santa Barbara Tuesday at Ceasar Uyesaka Stadium.
The five home runs in a single game was a school record for the Roadrunners who improve to 24-28 on the season. Kudlock's two homers tied three other players in CSUB's two-year history who have hit a pair of home runs in a single game.
Sam Jones picked up his first win of the year in his first start and 12th appearance. The senior lefty recorded three strikeouts and scattered nine hits and three walks for five earned runs in six-plus innings. Juan Padilla pitched three innings of hitless relief to pick up his first save of the season.
After their offense went cold last week at TCU, the Roadrunners opened Tuesday's game with a bang, scoring a pair of runs on a two-out home run by Medina, his team-leading 12th of the season.
The Gauchos responded in bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on an RBI single by Matt Valaika, a two-RBI triple by Beck Wheeler and a RBI-ground out by Ben Edelstein.
Bakersfield went on to add four more in the second, courtesy a solo home run by designated hitter Gaston and a three-run shot by Kudlock. The Roadrunners added single runs in the third and fourth to go ahead 8-4, but the Gauchos battled back with four runs on four hits and one error in the home half of the fourth to knot the score, 8-8.
CSUB reclaimed the lead for the final time in the fifth on an RBI-single by Brandon Boren, a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez and a wild pitch.
Following a scoreless top of the sixth, UCSB scored two runs on a pair of walks, CSUB fielding error and sacrifice fly, to pull to within one, 11-10, but Bakersfield added one run each in the seventh and eighth and Padilla held the Gauchos in check over the final three frames.
Rodriguez and Medina each tallied a trio of hits and two RBIs to lead the Roadrunners. Kudlock had two hits, both home runs, and four RBIs. Boren, Gaston, JJ Henry and Joey Mills added two hits each for CSUB, which finished with 16 total hits.
Three Gauchos had two hits each while Valaika and Beck Wheeler had three RBI's each. Reliever Sam Phippen took the loss for UCSB, his first of the season.
The Roadrunners travel to face Loyola Marymount Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Los Angeles.
