FRESNO, Calif. — The CSUB baseball team took a 4-0 lead early over Fresno State, but left the bases loaded three times and could not hang on in a 10-4 loss at Beiden Field Thursday.
The Roadrunners dropped to 12-12 overall while the Bulldogs improved to 14-12 on the season.
Designated hitter Mick Gaston launched an opposite field home run in the top of the second to give the Roadrunners and early 2-0 lead. JJ Henry also scored on the play after reaching on a single through the left side. The Roadrunners added two more in the third when Brandon Boren led off with a single to left and Martin Medina followed with a home run that cleared the 50-foot scoreboard beyond the left field fence.
In the bottom of the fourth, Fresno State rallied for three runs on an RBI-double by Dusty Robinson, a Trent Garrison RBI-ground out and a Garrett Weber sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, a Bobby Coyle two-RBI double to center put the Bulldogs on top 5-4. Justin Charles led off with a single up the middle and Danny Muno drew a walk to put runners on second and third. Spenser Messmore came in to relieve Mickey Jannis on the mound, but after a Brennan Gowens fielder's choice, Coyle came to bat to send the go-ahead run across the plate.
Things unravelled for Bakersfield in the eighth as Fresno State posted five unearned runs off of two hits, two errors and one walk to take a six-run lead.
The Roadrunners had bases loaded in the third, fourth and seventh innings, but left a total of 12 runners stranded in the game.
Jannis (3-1) took the loss after striking out five and scattered six hits for five runs in six innings of work.
Medina led the Roadrunners with three hits, including his team-leading eighth home run of the season. Boren stretched his current hit streak to 12 games, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
The two teams travel back to Hardt Field in Bakersfield for a 2:30 p.m. start on Friday and a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
