BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSUB Baseball team broke a six game losing streak and a two game scoreless streak with a 13-8 win over the University of Nevada Friday at Hardt Field.
The Roadrunners (6-7) broke out a recent hitting slump by banging out 14 hits, including a 3-for-5 effort from Martin Medina. The sophomore had a two-RBI double as part of a three-run first inning and added another two-RBI double in the eighth as part of a five-run rally that put the game away. Medina (2-0) was also the pitcher of record, striking out two and giving up one hit in the final 1.1 innings.
Nevada (7-5) scored a solo run in the first when Westley Moss scored an unearned run on a passed ball. But Bakersfield responded with three runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the second to hold an early 4-1 lead. The Roadrunners used a pair of hits, a pair of fielders' choices and a passed ball to add two more runs in the fourth, pushing the lead to 6-1.
The Wolf Pack's Michael Turay led off the sixth with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single to left center by Kevin Rodland, cutting the Roadrunner lead to 6-2. CSUB starting pitcher Mickey Jannis then drew a fly out to center and issued a walk to put runners on second and third, but struck out Brian Barnett to end the inning.
Bakersfield strung together three more hits in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs and pushing the lead to 8-2. Then things got interesting as Nevada added two runs in the seventh. A pair of CSUB fielding errors kept the Wolf Pack alive in the eighth, helping them score four runs to knot the score 8-8.
But the Roadrunners responded again with a vengeance, posting five runs in the bottom of the inning. JJ Henry led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Mills. Brandon Boren struck out swinging and Kyle Richardson drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Ryan McIntyre singled to center, sending Henry home and Medina collected his second double of the game to score McIntyre and Richardson. Jason Kudlock followed with a single that Nevada's center fielder misplayed, allowing Medina and Kudlock to cross home plate, capping the late rally.
Jannis went six complete innings for CSUB, fanning eight while allowing just one walk and five hits for three earned runs.
The Roadrunners sent Nevada starter Beau Witsoe to the bench after he gave up five hits, three walks and four runs in one-plus innings. Jesse Rasner pitched six innings while closer Taylor Graham took the loss, giving up four hits and four earned runs in the final inning.
The teams face off again Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hardt Field and conclude play Sunday at noon.
