BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Brandon Boren, Martin Medina and Joey Mills collected three hits apiece Sunday as the CSUB baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Air Force, taking the final match-up 12-4 at Hardt Field.
The Roadrunners (4-0) pounded out 16 hits while giving up just seven to the Falcons, who fell to 0-4.
After using seven long balls to score the majority of their runs in the first three games, the Roadrunners manufactured their runs with strings of hits and solid baserunning on Sunday. They took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI hits by Medina and Jeremy Rodriguez. After Air Force scored once in the second, Bakersfield added three runs each in the third, fourth and fifth, and one more in the sixth to push the spread to 12-2.
The Falcons scored once in the seventh on an unearned run by Nathan Carter, and once more in the ninth on a Carter solo home run, but would get no closer.
Boren went 3-for-4 with four RBI's on the day, pushing his series totals to 12-for-20 and seven RBI's. Medina was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI's and Jason Kudlock sent two across home plate with an RBI-single.
In the mound, junior Mike McCarthy made his first appearance in a Roadrunner uniform after sitting out last season due to transfer rules. He tossed a solid six innings, recording eight strikeouts to go along with a pair of walks and four hits allowed. Sam Jones and Erik Draxton combined for three innings of relief to close out the game.
Bakersfield sent Air Force starter Alex Baker to the dugout early as the freshman gave up nine hits for eight earned runs in just three innings.
The Roadrunners return action Friday, Saturday and Sunday when they host Saint Mary's, Central Michigan and Cal in a six-game round-robin tournament. Games begin Friday at 11 a.m. with a match-up between Central Michigan and Cal. Bakersfield takes on Saint Mary's at 2 p.m., then faces Central Michigan Saturday at 2 p.m. and Cal on Sunday at 2 p.m.
