BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Bakersfield's offense continued to roll and the defense and pitching turned in solid performances as well as the Roadrunner baseball team took 9-4 and 13-3 wins over Air Force Saturday at Hardt Field.
The Roadrunners moved to 3-0 on the season while the Falcons fell to 0-3 with one game remaining in the season-opening series.
Game one began much like Friday's opener, with the Roadrunners using a pair of solo home runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Martin Medina and Jason Kudlock both recorded their first homers of the season in the inning.
Air Force cut the lead in half when Garrett Custons led off with a double and later scored on a strikeout by Matt Alexander. But Bakersfield broke the game open with two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Leadoff hitter Brandon Boren went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Jeremy Rodriguez and Kudlock had two hits each. Seven Roadrunners tallied an RBI hit and nine players combined for 13 hits.
Jonathan Montoya picked up his first win of the season, fanning eight and scattering four hits for two earned runs in six innings of work. Spenser Messmore pitched two scoreless innings of relief and freshman Juan Padilla made his first appearance of the year, striking out one in the ninth.
Air Force starter Sean Carley (0-1) gave up 10 hits for seven runs, five earned, in six innings. Four additional Falcons tossed the final two innings, giving up three hits and a pair of earned runs.
In game two, Boren went 5-for-6 for the second time in a Roadrunner uniform as CSUB tallied 20 total hits. The senior second baseman achieved five hits once last year, in a 17-12 win over Fresno State, and is the only Roadrunner to tally five hits in the young program's history.
Medina added four hits, including an RBI-double and a two-RBI home run, and three other Roadrunners had two hits each.
Bakersfield led 4-0 after three innings, then pushed the lead to 7-1 in the fourth. Air Force scored two runs in the top of the fifth, cutting the spread to 7-3, but Bakersfield exploded for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning, putting the game away.
Newcomer Matt Reyes (1-0), a junior transfer out of Irvine Valley College, struck out four and scattered eight hits in seven complete innings. Medina pitched one inning of relief, recording a pair of strikeouts, and Erik Draxton finished things off, recording three straight outs in the ninth.
The Roadrunners and Falcons conclude their four-game series Sunday at Hardt Field. Please note that the start time has been moved up to noon.
