BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A match that had extra time written all over tilted against the CSUB women's soccer team in a flash as visiting Cal State Northridge scored late to sneak away from the Main Soccer Field with a 2–1 victory Thursday night.
Both teams used lightning quick runs to create goals, Northridge early in the first half and CSUB minutes into the second. But the Matadors took advantage of the match's only dangerous loose ball situation to earn the spoils just seven minutes from full time.
“I thought we played brilliant soccer in spurts,” said CSUB Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. “I thought we created some good chances offensively and were organized in the back. But we lost some gusto after we scored the goal and that was a time we needed to dig a little deeper because Northridge has a great team.”
Northridge opened the scoring in the 17th minute when sophomore Stephanie Galarze turned on the afterburners to make a long run down the right flank past the Roadrunner backline. Once in the box, she slid a pass to the goalmouth where Desiree Cardenas tapped home her fourth of the season.
CSUB equalized nine minutes into the second half on a similar type of play. This time, it was 'Runner freshman Tyler Shirk (Monrovia HS) who split the Northridge defense before playing a short through ball that put sophomore forward Sam Peña (Bakersfield HS) one–on–one with Matador keeper Cynthia Jacobo, who had no chance to deny Peña her sixth of the season and fifth in the past five matches.
“The goal was the result of a great build up,” said Van Dyke. “A good tackle by Racquel (Gervas) and then a good pass by Faith (Perry) to get Tyler started. Obviously Tyler made a great run and Sam has proven that she can finish.”
Galarze netted the match–winner with good second and third efforts. The decisive play looked innocent on its face, with Cardenas sending low shot from distance that was curling away from the far post. Roadrunner goalkeeper Kym Gause (Manteca/Modesto JC) went low to make the save but couldn't control the ball. Galarze pounced on the rebound only to be denied initially by a courageous point–blank stop from Gause.
The rebound, however, took a fortuitous bounce right back to Galarze's feet and she roofed the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Gause finished the evening with six saves while Jacobo went mostly untested, with seven of CSUB eight shots failing to find the frame.
CSUB (4–6–5 overall) takes seven days off before hosting Seattle University in its 2010 home final Friday, Oct. 29.
