Bruins' Offensive Explosion Overpowers ?Runners

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? UCLA used four multi-hit innings and got a solid performance from it's pitching staff to claim a 15-2 win over the CSUB baseball team Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The long ball accounted for the majority of UCLA's runs as they collected four home runs for eight runs in the opening five frames.

The Bruins (23-22) jumped on the board in the second with a two-run home run by Gabe Cohen and a sacrifice bunt that scored a runner from third for a 3-0 lead. In the third, Gino Aielli led off with a solo homer and, after a single and a walk, Cohen blasted his second homer of the day, a three-run shot to put the Bruins up 5-0.

UCLA added four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth, courtesy of a two run homer by Casey Haerther and an RBI single, giving the Bruins a 14-0 advantage.

Bakersfield's first opportunity to score came in the fourth when Kyle Richardson led of with a single and Brandon Boren walked to put runners on first and second, but Jeremy Rodriguez struck out and Ryan McIntyre and Richard Escalera hit back-to-back fly outs to end the inning.

In the sixth, the Roadrunners were able to push a run across the plate, avoiding a shutout. Joey Mills led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single to left by Rodriguez.

Mills scored again in the eight, leading off with a double to left-center and scoring on a double down the left field line by Eric Sanchez.

Starter Jonathan Montoya (3-5) took the loss for Bakersfield, striking out five while giving up eight hits for 10 runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Bakersfield had five total hits in the game, one each by Richardson, Sanchez, Rodriguez, Derek Geisinger and Mills.

UCLA starter Garett Claypool (2-1) struck out seven and allowed just one walk and one hit in 5 innings, picking up his second win of the season.

Aielli had a career-high five hits in six at bats, while also scoring three runs for UCLA. Cohen had a team-high five RBIs, while five Bruins tallied a pair of hits each.

Next up for Bakersfield (9-31) is a trip to Lincoln, Neb., for a three-game series at the University of Nebraska. First pitch on Friday is 4:05 p.m. PST, followed by a 2:05 p.m. start Saturday and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday.
