DAVIS, Calif. ? Joey Mills launched a second-inning grand slam and JJ Henry added an RBI-double late in the game as the CSUB baseball team claimed a 5-2 win over UC Davis Thursday at Dobbins Stadium.
UC Davis (11-41) struck early as Justin Schafer drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first, advanced to second on a Daniel Cepin ground out to short and scored on a double to left-center field by Ty Kelly.
Bakersfield (12-35) responded in the top of the second, gathering a 4-1 lead on Mills' home run. Jeremy Rodriguez began the frame with a walk, Ryan McIntyre laid down a bunt single to third and JJ Henry reached on bunt single to the pitcher. With one out and the bases loaded, Mills turned in the 2-1 pitch, blasting his first home run of the season, a grand slam over the left field fence.
Cepin opened the home half of the third with a bunt single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a Kelly ground out, then scored on a single through the right side by Ryan Scoma, cutting the Roadrunner lead to 4-2.
After being unable to push a run across the plate with a bases loaded, zero outs situation in the fifth, Bakersfield added a fifth run in the top of the eighth. Rodriguez reached on a fielding error by Aggie first baseman Grant Hirneise and advanced to second on a Ryan McIntyre ground out. Jason Kudlock drew a walk, with a ball-four wild pitch, allowing Rodriguez to move to third for JJ Henry who knocked a RBI-double down the left field line for a 5-2 ?Runner lead.
Starting pitcher Martin Medina worked his way out of a jam in the seventh to maintain the CSUB lead. After getting Scott Kalush to pop out to the shortstop for out No. 1, Medina gave up a walk to Justin Schafer. He got out No. 2 on a Cepin line-out to left, then issued back-to-back walks to Kelly and Scoma to load the bases, but came up with a ground out to short by Joseph Medeiros to leave three Aggies stranded.
Medina pitched seven complete innings, striking out three and scattering five hits for two runs while earning his third win of the season. Sam Jones closed out the final two innings, striking out three while picking up his first save of the year.
Henry went 3-for-4 to lead the Bakersfield offense. Along with Mills' grand slam, four other ?Runners tallied a hit including Richardson, Boren, Medina and McIntyre.
Scott Chew (1-8) took the loss for UC Davis, giving up a pair of walks and six hits for four runs in six innings. The Aggies totalled seven hits, one each from seven different players.
The ?Runners travel to Stockton for a season-ending three-game series against University of Pacific. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is 5:35 p.m. while Sunday's finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
