BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Mickey Jannis pitched a 10-strikeout, zero-walk complete game, but the Roadrunner offense could not match the junior right-hander's performance, as CSUB fell 3-0 to Cal State Northridge Tuesday at Hardt Field.
The game began as a pitcher's dual as just five total hits were allowed in the first four innings. Cal State Northridge (23-30) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Brian Slover reached on a bunt single to catcher Jeremy Rodriguez. Ryan Pineda then doubled deep down the left field line and Slover safely crossed home plate. After Jannis got Jason Dabbs to strike out looking, C.J. Belanger singled to center and Pineda narrowly beat the throw home for a 2-0 Matador lead.
The Matadors added a single run in the sixth as Richard Cates singled to right, John Parham singled to left and Slover singled to short while Cates scored from third.
Bakersfield (11-35) had one chance to score early, including getting runners to second and third in the second. Richard Escalera led off with a walk and Martin Medina followed with a single to center, moving Escalera to third. Medina advanced to second on a ground out by Rodriguez, but the two were left stranded as Derek Geisinger struck out swinging and Stuart Smith grounded out.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Richardson drew a leadoff walk, but back-to-back strikeouts and a fielder's choice ground out ended any hopes of a late inning rally for the ?Runners.
Northridge starting pitcher Bryan Longpre struck out two, walked one and allowed three hits in three innings. Paul Tremlin (7-1) picked up the win for the Matadors, striking out one in 2 2/3 innings. Five other pitchers appeared for 2/3 innings each with Slover wrapping things up with a strikeout and a ground out, earning his team-leading eighth save of the season.
Jannis' 10 strikeouts were a season-high for both the Reno, Nev., native and the CSUB baseball program. He had previously recorded a high of nine against Fresno State on Apr. 3. The zero walks issued was also a program first.
Richardson, Medina and Joey Mills recorded the Roadrunners' only hits on the day.
Bakersfield hits the road for its final four games of the 2009 season. Up first is a rescheduled single contest at UC Davis on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The ?Runners then travel to Stockton for a season-ending three-game series against University of Pacific. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is 5:35 p.m. while Sunday's finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
