CHENEY, Wash. ?-
The CSUB women's soccer team scored a season-high three goals Friday evening and needed every
one of them as the Roadrunners outlasted a late charge by Eastern
Washington to win their first road contest of the season, 3-2. The
win moves the ?Runners record back over .500 to 3-2-0. The Eagles drop to 0-3-1.
Freshman forward Sarina Coutin scored her second goal of the
season in the 24th minute to put CSUB up, 1-0. The first year striker got a
pass from classmate Kassi Massey as she was streaking towards the goal and
found the back of the net.
Senior Michelle Martinez added a goal of her own just before
halftime with a strike from 15 yards out in the 42nd minute. It was her first
goal of the season.
Kassi Massey added what would be the game-winning goal in
the 51st minute, making an athletic move to get past the EWU defenders and got
a shot off from outside the box.
“I am happy that Martinez
scored her first goal of the year and that we are getting goals from different
players,” said Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke.
Things got interesting late in the game as CSUB goalkeeper
Marina Contantinou was given a red card in the 73rd minute after tripping an Eastern
Washington attacker in the box and was sent off. With sophomore
Briana Estalono replacing Constantinou, the Eagles scored on the ensuing
penalty kick to cut the lead to two. Eastern
Washington would add another goal less than five minutes later off
a corner kick that was one-timed into the back of the net by Lauryn Kolzer.
“The tides turned quickly during the game in the last 17
minutes,” added Van Dyke. “But we managed to weather the storm with 10 players.
A win is a win and we are very pleased to capture our first game on the road
this year.”
Ashley Renz had six saves for Eastern Washington.
The ?Runners defense did not allow a shot on goal until the penalty kick in the
73rd minute. CSUB outshot the Eagles, 12-6.
The ?Runners are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Spokane,
Wash., to face the Bulldogs of Gonzaga at 1 p.m.
