FRESNO, Calif. ? A trio of throwers and a pair of jumpers are still alive for the CSUB track & field team following a day of preliminary heats at the Cal-Nevada Championships hosted by Fresno State. Brian Lopez, Steve Trojanowski, Derek Johnson, Ke'Airra Jones and Peace Nwosu all earned top 10 marks Friday, advancing to Saturday's championship round.
“I'm pleased with the group of athletes,” said Roadrunner Head Coach Alan Collatz. “We had a couple others barely miss making the finals, but this is a big, tough meet and we've got a lot of young kids who will have another chance next year.”
Lopez, a senior, scored a season-best 189-02 in the men's javelin to place third in the preliminary round. Trojanowski scored a season-best mark of 151-0, more than eight feet further than his previous best, but came in three places shy of the top 10. The junior from
La Verne did qualify in the men's hammer throw, however, placing ninth with a mark of 177-02.
Also advancing to Saturday's finals on the men's side was freshman Derek Johnson, who placed seventh with a throw of 163-01. His top mark Friday was 10 feet shy of his career-best, but plenty far to him into a second day of competition.
On the women's side, high jumpers Jones and Nwosu moved into the finals with jumps of 5-05 and 5-03, respectively. Jones, a freshman from Natchez, Miss., jumped as high as 5-10 as a prep athlete, but did not have to attempt a height above 5-05 Friday.
Freshman Cameron Jost narrowly missed the top nine cut in the 400 meter dash, placing 11th in a time of 49.73. Also coming up just short of a finals berth was freshman Ryan Nichols who placed 13th in the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.12.
