SAN FRANCISCO ? The CSUB volleyball team pulled off an impressive comeback in game one but couldn't sustain the momentum in a 29?31, 30?24, 30?25, 30?18 loss at the University of San Francisco Friday night at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco.
Melissa Myers (12 kills), Sarah Norman (11) and Rosemary Stribling (10) each reached double figures for CSUB, but it wasn't enough to offset the 21?kill, four?block performance of USF senior outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg.
Bakersfield (4?11 overall) trailed 25?17 in game one but clawed its way back. Three consecutive service aces by Kayla Williamson highlighted an 11?3 run that knotted the game at 28?28.
CSUB staved off a USF game point at 29?28 when Stribling and Gabe Curtis combined for a block. A Mystie McNaughton ace and a Myers kill completed the improbable comeback.
USF (10?5) jumped out to another early lead in game two and, this time, didn't let the Roadrunners get close. The match then turned in a pivotal third game when CSUB scratched out a 24?22 lead only to be out?scored 8?1 down the stretch as the Dons took control of the match.
Bakersfield was within 14?12 in game four before USF went on another big run, this time using a 13?2 spurt to put the game and the match out of reach.
