FRESNO, Calif. ? Sophomore outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Stockdale HS) collected match and career highs of 23 kills to lead the CSUB volleyball team to a 30?26, 30?23, 26?30, 30?25 win over valley rival Fresno State Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.
McWhorter had matched her previous career high of 15 kills in Saturday's five?game marathon with Utah Valley. Tuesday, she was one of several Roadrunners who had big matches.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Norman (Stockdale HS) pounded out 18 kills, including nine in game one alone, against just one error. Junior libero Mystie McNaughton (Stockdale HS) chipped in a match?high 27 digs, a total which ranks No. 4 all?time for a four?game match at CSUB. She added four kills in four attempts, an unusually high number for a libero.
Thanks in large part to their efforts, the 'Runners hit an even .300 for the match. It was the fourth time this season CSUB has hit .300 or better.
Norman had six kills early as Bakersfield (5?14 overall) raced to a 16?9 lead in game one. Fresno (5?16) pulled to within 28?25 before two more Norman kills gave the 'Runners the first game.
Fresno State led early in game two before a pair of McWhorter kills helped Bakersfield turn a 16?15 deficit into a 19?16 lead it would not relinquish. Norman again provided the final two kills to put CSUB firmly in control two games to none.
Fresno State stormed ahead early in game three, taking leads of 10?1 and 12?3. But Bakersfield battled back, scrapping to within 27?25 before the Bulldogs finally closed the game out. But the momentum of CSUB's comeback carried over into the fourth game. The 'Runners jumped out to a 6?1 lead and kept Fresno State at arm's length for the duration to earn their first win in eight tries against their nearest NCAA Division I neighbor.
CSUB will continue its trip north through the San Joaquin Valley when it plays at the University of the Pacific in Stockton Friday night. The 'Runners return home to host Fresno Pacific and Fresno State next Tuesday and Wednesday.
