ARCATA, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield senior
Taylar Sklar continued her torrid goal-scoring pace on Sunday with her eighth goal in six matches but the Roadrunners lost their second match of the season 2-1 to Humboldt State in Arcata.
Sklar continued to stay on pace to break current Bakersfield Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke's single-season scoring record with her eighth goal, but it came after the Roadrunners had already fallen behind by two goals. Sklar scored in the 67th minute unassissted when she kicked in a loose ball in the penalty area.
But Humboldt State won its first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Bakersfield after being a force in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in past years thanks to Kim Halloran's two goals in a four-minute span. Halloran scored her first in the 57th minute on an assist from Lindsey Harpham and followed in the 61st minute with a goal from Kelsey Gomula.
This was a defensive battle with the two teams combining for just 11 shots for the match. Bakersfield actually outshot Humboldt State 6-5 including a 5-2 margin in the second half, but the Lumberjacks scored on both of those shots in the second half.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Ashley Witten did not make a save and allowed both goals, while Humboldt's Kelly Sandberg earned the win playing in the second half and making three saves.
Van Dyke's single-season record is 17 goals, which Sklar is already nearly half-way to achieving. Sklar now has 14 more matches to score nine goals after it took her six matches to score eight goals.
Sklar will look to increase her scoring totals on Wednesday when the Roadrunners travel to Los Angeles to take on Cal State L.A. in the second half of a men's-women's doubleheader. The women are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
