Roadrunners Cruise In Season Opener Over Hawaii Pacific, 106-44

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team had no problems in winning its 2006-07 season opener at the Icardo Center on Friday with a 106-44 victory over Hawaii Pacific.

Amazingly the 62-point margin of victory was not a school record, as the Roadrunners missed that mark by one point. The school record for largest margin of victory for Bakersfield is 63 points from 2002 in a 105-42 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

But there were two school records broken in an impressive defensive performance on Friday night. The Sea Warriors committed 41 turnovers on the night, which is the most by a Roadrunner opponent. The former mark was set last season when Western New Mexico had 38 turnovers. Not surprisingly, Bakersfield broke its school record for most steals in a game with 28, which was one better than the 27 the Roadrunners had against Cal State Monterey Bay in 2002.

Five players scored in double figures for the Roadrunners with Rhondi Naff and Jessi Loring leading the way with 16 points apiece. Loring had a double-double with 10 rebounds to go with her 16 points. Also for Bakersfield, Rhonda Johnson scored 12 points while Kelley Tarver and Tiffany Belt each scored 10. Naomi Johnson came off the bench for nine points and 10 rebounds.

For HPU, Ashley Jordan was the only player to reach double-figure scoring with 11 points.

Bakersfield jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes, 23 seconds of the game but HPU hung around and actually outscored the Roadrunners over the next nine minutes of the game and narrowed the lead to nine at 30-21 with 5:56 remaining in the first half.

But after a timeout by Bakersfield Head Coach Tim LaKose, the Roadrunners picked up the defensive pressure and they dominated the game from that point on. Bakersfield outscored the Sea Warriors 21-2 in the final 5:56 of the half to lead 51-23. Over the final 5:56 of the first half and the first 7:03 of the second half, the Roadrunners went on an outrageous 45-8 run to blow the game open.

Maybe even more impressive for Bakersfield, the Roadrunners outscored HPU 80-23 in the final 24:04 of the game.

The Roadrunners will likely face a much stiffer test in their next game on Monday in a 7 p.m. game against UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev.
