Over 2,000 Fans Watch `Runners Battle in Draw

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With the support of 2,012 fans cheering the Roadrunners on, the Cal State Bakersfield men's soccer team battled the Santa Clara Broncos Wednesday night on the Main Soccer Field. CSUB earned its first result of the season, a 1-1 draw, while partnering with Kern County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services in the Third Annual Kickin' It With Behavioral Health Night.

Bakersfield fell behind late in the first half when Santa Clara watch a hard blast from Gabrielus Mazonas hit the back of the net. The `Runners continued to pressure, rolling momentum into the second half before equalizing in the 63rd minute. Joey Velasquez crossed the ball into the box, then after a deflection off a Bronco defender, Filip Arras buried his first goal of the season to make the score 1-1.

Both teams continued pressing for a go-ahead goal and play turned physical. CSUB's Bogart Roca received a red card for a serious foul in the 71st minute, putting the `Runners in a tough position. Despite playing down a man, the `Runners created a goal-scoring opportunity three minutes later, but a Bronco defender prevented the chance and received a red card of his own. With both teams even at 10 men apiece, play continued over the final 17 minutes with neither team able to break the deadlock despite a few close chances.

CSUB will be back in action at the Main Soccer Field on Sunday, Sept. 21, when the `Runners host Gonzaga. Get your tickets at the link below. Skip the line, buy online!
