Bakersfield Earns 1-1 Draw at UCLA

LOS ANGELES – Facing off against a UCLA squad that already boasts a win against the No. 11-ranked team in the country, the Cal State Bakersfield men's soccer team stood tall in a 1-1 draw. The Roadrunners took a second-half lead over the Bruins and sealed the tie thanks to a valiant effort from goalkeeper Zenden Hart and the CSUB backline.

Key Facts
  • A former UCLA Bruin who transferred to CSUB, Oshea Foster provided the offense for the `Runners tonight in Los Angeles.
    • Foster has now scored a goal in each of Bakersfield's first two games of the season.
  • Hart, the reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week, made five saves while the `Runner defense threw their bodies into the fray with six blocked shots.
  • Monday's matchup was the first regular-season contest between CSUB and UCLA. Bakersfield earned exhibition wins each of the last two seasons before earning an official tie Monday night.
  • Eight of the eleven CSUB starters played all 90 minutes in the match, laying it all out on the pitch.

First Half

The two teams played to a scoreless, yet entertaining first half. UCLA outshot CSUB 10-1 in the first half, but only two of the 10 attempts were on target as the `Runner defense fended off several dangerous attacks. Goalkeeper Zenden Hart, the reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week, made two saves in the period to help keep the score tied.

Bakersfield's one good attempt on goal in the opening 45 minutes came off a UCLA turnover in the final third. CSUB's Kevin Estrada passed the ball to former Bruin Oshea Foster in the box and, after some dancing, the forward put a blast on the ball that sailed maybe a foot wide of the goal.

Second Half

UCLA continued to pressure the `Runners, but the Bakersfield backline withheld the storm time and time again. In the 72nd minute, Joey Velasquez sent a deep ball over the top of the Bruin defense, finding Foster in perfect stride. The UCLA goalie was caught off his line and lost a 50-50 clash with Foster, who chased the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

In the 81st minute, UCLA finally found the back of the net on its 19th shot of the match when Franci Bonsu's right foot scored the equalizer. Bakersfield responded well and continued to pressure its host over the final 10 minutes, but the two teams wrapped up the 1-1 draw after a hard-fought battle.
