17 Hits Sends Bakersfield Past Nevada 16-2

RENO, Nev. - The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team used an offensive explosion to earn a 16-2 victory against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners tallied 17 hits on the way to 16 runs, which ranks in CSUB's Top 10 all-time for most runs in a game, while the pitching staff held Nevada quiet. Head Coach Jordon Banfield's lineup scattered hits up and down the card with catcher Tyler Leroy leading the way.

After dropping the first game of the series in Nevada Friday night, 7-4, the `Runners (2-4) earned their first road win of the season on Saturday. CSUB jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Nevada's pitching staff kept its visitors quiet for the next 4 innings. The `Runners tacked on 5 more runs in the sixth before adding 2 in the seventh and 4 in the eighth. After the `Runner pitchers tallied 6-straight scoreless innings, Nevada finally put another run up in the bottom of the eighth, but it was too little too late as Bakersfield sealed the 16-2 victory an inning later.

Leroy, a transfer to CSUB from Southern Illinois, went 3-for-5 from the plate with 2 doubles and 5 RBI. Brock Perreira (3), Lewis Barnum V (2), Elijah Pelayo (2), and Tyrese Johnson (2) all tallied multi-hit games and combined for the other 9 RBI for Bakersfield.

A trio of `Runner pitchers put together an impressive performance against the Wolf Pack. Sophomore Shane McAlinden got things started on the mound, throwing 4 innings while striking out 2 and allowing just 1 run. Senior Michael Riley picked up the win, pitching 3 scoreless innings and striking out a pair as well. Second-year `Runner Kanoa Morisaki closed out the final two innings, allowing a run and 3 hits to go with 1 strikeout.

Bakersfield and Nevada have two games remaining in the series. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. while the two teams will close out the series in Reno on Monday at 12:05 p.m. Follow along live via the Mountain West Network, links available at GoRunners.com/Live.
