UC Irvine Slips Past CSUB in Late Innings to Take Series

Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to break open a tie ball game and lift the Anteaters to a 6-3 win, Sunday afternoon at Cicerone Field. The win gave UCI a 2-1 series win and dropped the Roadrunners to 18-31 and 11-16 in Big West Conference play with one weekend remaining in the season.

"I thought our guys did a really nice job of competing all weekend and we we're in all three games," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "Everything is magnified in close games. We lost a few pivotal moments this weekend which cost us the series."

Jashia Morrissey and James Bell keyed a two-out Bakersfield rally in the fifth. After Morrissey put CSUB on the board with a single through the right side, Bell short-hopped the wall in centerfield to score two and tie the game at three. Both finished 1-for-4 on the afternoon.

Three UCI relievers combined to allow just two hits over 4.0 innings pitched, striking out five 'Runners and not allowing a base on ball. Senior Andre Antone picked up his third win of the season.

Adrian Santa Cruz took the loss for CSUB, despite allowing just three earned runs over 5.2 innings pitched with four punchouts. Santa Cruz is now 1-3.

How It Happened...
B2 | Anteater Justin Torres homered high over the fence in right to score two and give UCI an early lead. Abraham Garcia-Pacheco also scored on the play after being hit by a pitch to open the frame. Two of the next two UCI hitters would single, setting the table for Woody Hadeen to double over shortstop and make it 3-0.

T5 | The Roadrunners tied the game with three two-out runs in the fifth. Jashia Morrissey singled in Cody Hendriks to put Bakersfield on the board, and James Bell added a two-run double off the wall in centerfield to complete the rally.

B6 | Caden Kendle singled up the middle with two outs, scoring Luke Spillane to make it 4-3 Anteaters after six full innings.

B7 | Justin Torres doubled into the right field corner to extend UCI's lead to 5-3.

B8 | Taishi Nakawake led off the inning with a double into the gap in left-center and came around to score on Woody Hadeen's single over the mound and through the middle infield to cap the scoring and make it 6-3 Irvine.
