#17 UCSB Strikes Early, Takes Game One From CSUB

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield rallied to tie the game at five, but #17 UC Santa Barbara scored three runs in the top of the fourth retake the lead and never looked back, winning game one of a three-game series at Hardt Field, 9-6, Thursday evening. The Roadrunners fell to 18-32 overall and 11-17 in Big West play, while the Gauchos improved to 41-12 and 25-3. 

James Bell, Andrew Allanson and Nick Salas each had a pair of hits as part of an eleven-hit Bakersfield attack. All three scored a run, with Allanson driving in another and Bell and Salas each driving in two. Salas tied the game at five in the third when he chopped a two-out, two-run single up the middle for his first hit of the night. 

Blake Klassen and Nick Vogt each drove in three runs for Santa Barbara, in support of starter Cory Lewis who picked up his ninth win of the season after allowing five runs in 5.0 innings and striking out six. 

Jaykob Acosta took the loss for CSUB, surrendering nine hits and eight earned runs in 3.2 innings. Acosta falls to 3-7 on the season. 

Ryan Verdugo allowed just two hits, a pair of walks and a single earned runs over 4.1 innings of excellent relief. 

 
How It Happened... 
T1 | The Gauchos took control of this game early, scoring three runs on four hits in their first at bat. Bryce Willits led off the game with a double to left and scored one batter later, on Blake Klassen's RBI single up the middle. Kyle Johnson and Broc Mortensen added run-scoring singles in the inning.
 
T2 | UCSB added two more in the second on a run-scoring double from Klassen and a sacrifice fly from Nick Vogt. Giani Bloom doubled and scored in the inning.
 
B3 | CSUB roared back to tie the game in the third, sending nine men to the plate and scoring five. Jashia Morrissey put the 'Runners on the board with a double to left, before James Bell, Andrew Allanson and Nick Salas added consecutive run-scoring singles. Salas' base hit scored to draw Bakersfield even.
 
T4 | Santa Barbara answered with two in the fourth, retaking the lead 8-5. After a hit by pitch, walk and infield single loaded the bases Vogt chopped a single through the left side to score two. Christian Kirtley would add an RBI single in the frame.
 
B7 | Outfielders AJ Miller and James Bell hit back-to-back doubles to center field to make it 8-6.
 
T8 | UCSB got that run back in the top of the eighth when Jordan Sprinkle led off the inning with a single and scored on Klassen's single up the middle.


Notable...
• UC Santa Barbara comes into the weekend ranked #17 in the Division I Baseball Poll and is the first ranked opponent to visit Hardt Field since May 23, 2021, when UC Irvine visited as the #20 team in the nation.

The Roadrunners and Gauchos will continue their three-game series, Saturday at 6:05 p.m., with CSUB starter Benji Caggianelli opposed by UCSB left-hander Mike Gutierrez.
