Track & Field at Sunbird Invitational on Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Excitement boils around CSU Bakersfield outdoor track and field as the teams open the 2021 season on Saturday at the Sunbird Invitational hosted by Fresno Pacific University.

The women's team is expected to be a strong pole vault contingent at the meet behind four vaulters in Miranda Miller, Julianne Finch, Alexa Schaffer and Kassidy Neptune. In their last outing last season Miller, Finch and Schaffer swept the top three places to set a good tone for the year.

Director of Track and Field, Cross Country Marcia Mansur-Wentworth praised the way her athletes have responded to the pandemic noting, "While the team has only been practicing for three weeks, they have been working very hard and are looking for the early meets to shake off the rust and get back to competition."

Riley Slayton will compete in her specialty event, 400-meter hurdles. In her last conference championship, Slayton earned a bronze medal in the event.

Freshmen Kailee Yoshishige and Julia Stein will each compete in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter race making their debut in Roadrunner uniforms.  Both had a late start to training coming from Oregon and Germany, respectively and a mandated two-week quarantine upon arriving in Bakersfield.

Hannah Walker will compete in the high jump and round the women's entries in the Sunbird Invitational at eight total athletes.

The men's group traveling this weekend will consist of mostly newcomers. Freshman Brandon Andrade is entered in the 400-meter hurdles. Transfer Evan Vigrass will race in the 400-meter and 110-meter hurdles.

Freshmen Jesus Alverez and Ryan Bentley will compete in the high jump while transfer Bradley Bryant will contest the triple jump. All five athletes will be making their debut as Roadrunners in Fresno on Saturday.

Derek Crawford will race in the 400 with Vigrass and also in the 200-meter this weekend. Crawford was off to a great start in 2020 with huge personal bests in the opening meet.

Bakersfield men and women's throwers will not compete at the Sunbird Invitational but will throw in two weeks when the Roadrunners are back at FPU.
